VGC Student Experience – Meet Inseo from South Korea

  • Name: Inseo Cho
  • Home Country: South Korea
  • VGC Courses: Global English

Meet Inseo (Joy), a graduate student from Korea who came to Vancouver to combine her passion for travel with her goal of improving her English. Currently pursuing a master’s degree in architecture and urban studies back home, Joy chose to spend three months at VGC International College to gain overseas experience and strengthen her communication skills. Drawn to VGC’s balanced curriculum and vibrant activity calendar, she’s embraced life in Vancouver, building friendships from around the world, exploring the city’s stunning sights, and enjoying unforgettable moments with VGC Activities.

Could you please introduce yourself?

Hello. My name is Inseo Cho (English name is Joy) from Korea. I’m staying in Vancouver for a relatively short period of 3 months. I’m currently studying architecture and urban in master’s program at university, and I came to Vancouver for a english training to gain more overseas experience.

What attracted you to enroll in the English program at VGC?

The reason why I chose VGC among the many Vancouver language schools was the well-distributed curriculum, passionate classes, and diverse activities. Other language schools often focused only on specific fields (speaking, reading, academy), but I liked the fact that grammar, listening, reading, and speaking are appropriate in VGC books. I think that the system that can level up helped students improve their english academics. To be honest, I think the reason why I came abroad for language training is travel and experience as much as study. The best advantage is that VGC activities are listed on the calendar every month, and there are many options and diversity. Even if you don’t try to speak English, you can naturally talk to foreign friends in English. The advantage of VGC is that I can speak English well even if I don’t try hard.

How would you rate the support you got from your teachers and staff?

The teacher is very kind and tries to treat us like a friend, not a strict teacher. They also invest sincerely to improve our English skills. They play various English games that are not just textbook-centered, or students become teachers themselves and teach grammar. I don’t feel bored with the various ways of teaching progress.

In what ways has the course enhanced your English skills and development?

Many Koreans are very good at grammar due to english academic focused on grammar in our own hometown, but they are vulnerable to speaking and listening. vgc was not only focused on one part, but it was good to be able to learn grammar speaking and listening reading appropriately. Especially in the case of speaking and listening, there is a rule that “only use English” in the school, so it has naturally improved without having to learn separately in class. (Although I’m still struggling a lot.)

Do you think this course will help you in your future career?

Of course. Whatever your major, all jobs are becoming international now. Especially in Korea, overseas experience is very important. Also, my major is architecture and urban, and there are many famous architecture companies overseas, and I believe that my experience of studying English at VGC will be of great help when I apply for an internship at an overseas architecture company in the future.

Are you happy with the classmates you have? Have you been able to create networks or connections through this program?

VGC activities form a really big international network. First of all, you can apply with your friends, but even if you apply alone, you can meet new friends within the activity. VGC constantly provides us with international connections. As you only talk in English, your speaking and listening skills will naturally improve. Especially shy Asian friends, I’m always grateful that a lot of energetic Latin friends come to ours.

What made you want to study here in Vancouver? Is there a memorable moment or activity that you’d like to share?

In my master’s program at university in Korea, There were many times when I couldn’t understand English classes properly in graduate school. Sometimes I couldn’t talk to foreigners in the lab, so I found it difficult to study. Originally, I was going to go to a conversation academy in Korea. However before it was too late, I wanted to live abroad and learn English. Vancouver has a variety of activities, including not only cities but also many natures, so I chose it. I was most impressed by the sunset kayaking at Jerico Beach to see the sunset. In addition to this, it was great to be able to make various friends in various activities such as night market, Capilano Bridge, soccer watching, and picnic.

Would you recommend VGC to other students who want to study English in Vancouver?

As I said before, VGC can learn overall English in a balanced way. But another big advantage is the “active class”. In the core class, if you take a balanced class that suits your level, in the active class, you can focus on your weaknesses. That’s why I can apply for listening and pronunciation classes to customize the perfect timetable for me. If you want to learn all parts of English evenly but want to focus a little more on your weak parts, I recommend VGC, which allows you to make a timetable yourself. In addition, there are many activities, and you can improve your English skills even when you play. I strongly recommend VGC, where you can study properly and play with VGC’s own activities when you play.
