When Yesong came to Canada, she was searching for more than just English improvement—she wanted to experience life abroad and use the language naturally in everyday situations. During her three months at VGC, she found not only supportive teachers and meaningful friendships, but also a true sense of belonging in Vancouver. In this testimonial, Yesong shares how stepping out of her comfort zone led to unforgettable memories, personal growth, and friendships that turned a foreign city into home.
Hi! I’m Yesong.
The reason I came to Canada was a long-standing desire to experience life in a foreign country. While studying English in Korea, I developed a strong wish to further improve my skills and, more importantly, to use the language naturally in real-life situations. This desire ultimately led me to choose Canada as my destination.
Back home, I often felt the monotony of a busy city life—constantly moving between gray buildings in a repetitive routine. During that time, I discovered Vancouver, a city where nature and urban life coexist in perfect harmony. The more I learned about it, the more beautiful it seemed, and eventually, I fell in love with the city and decided to make it my home.
I knew that standing on my own in a foreign land would not be easy. Everything felt new and unfamiliar; even words I thought I knew seemed different here. To truly immerse myself in life in Vancouver, I realized I needed friends and mentors to guide me. That was how I found VGC, a school with a truly warm and welcoming atmosphere.
I still vividly remember my first day at VGC. In a place where everything felt daunting and unfamiliar, so many people welcomed me with open hearts. They generously shared helpful tips for adjusting to life here and soon became my friends. Through that warmth, meeting people from diverse backgrounds allowed me to naturally settle into life in Vancouver.
To me, my friends became both reliable siblings and healthy competitors. We were not competing to defeat one another, but rather encouraging each other to grow together. We studied to better understand one another and motivated ourselves to level up as a team. In doing so, we became sources of positive influence for each other. The time we spent learning about different cultures and languages has become one of my most unforgettable treasures. Before I knew it, the label of “foreigner” had disappeared, replaced simply by the word “friend.”
One of my most cherished memories during my time in Vancouver is the day I went to English Bay with my classmates after school. What began as a friend’s spontaneous suggestion turned into a special picnic for all of us. Walking together under the bright sunshine, chatting endlessly, and later sharing drinks at a pub—those moments were truly joyful. Since it was the first time we all bonded as a group, it remains an indelible memory.
As I graduate, I feel a deep sense of gratitude, as if I have received so much in just three short months. Choosing VGC was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I made during my time in Vancouver. I am truly grateful to have met such precious friends and to have created these meaningful memories together.
If anyone were to ask me what the best part of Vancouver was, I would answer without hesitation: my school life at VGC. I am sincerely thankful to VGC for giving me memories that I will cherish forever.
