Could you please introduce yourself?
Hello, my name is Ryu, and I’m originally from Japan. I have a background in Psychology and Education, and I came to Vancouver to improve my English and gain practical business knowledge to support my future goals.
What attracted you to enroll in the English program and then in the Business program at VGC?
I was first attracted to VGC’s English program because I wanted to build real confidence in speaking and professional communication. Although I had studied English before, I wanted to express my ideas clearly and confidently in discussions and presentations. After completing the English program, I continued into the Business Diploma program to strengthen my leadership skills, presentation abilities, and understanding of global business.
In what ways has the course improved your English and professional skills?
The courses significantly improved both my English and professional skills. Through presentations, case studies, and teamwork, I learned how to communicate complex ideas in a clear and structured way. The Business Presentation and Leadership courses especially helped me develop confidence when speaking in front of others. The Co-op program also provided valuable practical experience that prepared me for real workplace situations.
Do you think this course will help you in your future career?
In addition to my studies, my work experience in Canada helped me grow tremendously. Working in a multicultural environment taught me adaptability, teamwork, and responsibility. I learned how to collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds and communicate effectively in professional settings. These experiences strengthened both my confidence and independence.
After completing my program, I volunteered in Kenya, where I taught English and Mathematics at a local primary school. This experience was not only about gaining international exposure, but also about understanding the educational challenges students face in different environments. Through teaching, I became more aware of the struggles that can affect children’s development, including limited resources and cultural differences in learning styles. It allowed me to view education from a broader perspective and deepened my understanding of global educational inequality.
Because of the confidence I developed through VGC’s presentation training and classroom discussions, I was able to clearly communicate my ideas and long-term vision to local professionals in Kenya. As a result, I had the opportunity to visit a local company and exchange ideas directly with business leaders. This experience helped me grow in many ways. It strengthened my adaptability, cross-cultural communication skills, and personal confidence. Most importantly, it made me realize how essential communication, empathy, and leadership are in creating meaningful opportunities and impact.
During my time in Kenya, I was also struck by the significant gap between urban and rural areas. In major cities, development was far more advanced than many people might imagine — with modern buildings, growing industries, and strong entrepreneurial energy. At times, it was difficult to believe it was the same country when compared to some of the rural communities I visited. In contrast, at the primary school where I volunteered, the facilities were very limited. The toilets were in poor condition, there was no running water, and students washed their hands using stored water that was not always clean. Road conditions in some areas were also challenging, especially during the rainy season.
Seeing these differences firsthand made me reflect deeply on inequality and access to resources. It helped me understand how infrastructure, environment, and opportunity can significantly influence children’s development and future possibilities. At the same time, I was inspired by the resilience and positivity of the students despite these challenges. The experience broadened my global perspective and strengthened my motivation to contribute to more inclusive and sustainable educational systems.
While my future path is still evolving, my experiences in different countries have given me a clearer direction. I am especially interested in initiatives that combine education, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic development. In the long term, I hope to contribute to projects that create opportunities and support sustainable growth in diverse communities around the world.
How would you rate the support you got from your teachers and staff?
The support I received from teachers and staff at VGC was excellent. They were approachable, encouraging, and always willing to provide constructive feedback. I felt supported both academically and personally throughout my studies.
Were you happy with the classmates you had? Have you been able to create networks or connections through this program?
I was also very happy with my classmates. Since students came from many different countries, I was able to build international friendships and networks. Working in diverse teams allowed me to develop cross-cultural communication skills and appreciate different perspectives.
What made you want to study here in Vancouver? Is there a memorable moment or activity that you’d like to share?
One of the most memorable aspects of studying in Vancouver was experiencing its multicultural atmosphere. Every day felt like an opportunity to learn from people around the world. Living and studying in such an international environment expanded my mindset and inspired me to think globally.
Would you recommend VGC to other students who want to study English and Business in Vancouver?
I would definitely recommend VGC to students who want to improve their English while gaining practical business skills in a supportive and international environment. It is a place where you can grow academically, professionally, and personally.
