Seonwoo Bae, an interview writer and magazine editor from South Korea, came to Vancouver with a unique goal: to experience the world through a new language. After years of working with words in Korean, she challenged herself to step outside her comfort zone and rediscover the joy of communication through English. Hello, my name is Seonwoo Bae, and I am from South Korea. I work as an interview writer and magazine editor. I have been involved in various editorial projects related to “archiving and recording,” such as book publishing, community archiving, and producing local newsletters. Above all, what I love most is meeting new people every week, interviewing them, and capturing their lives through my writing.
안녕하세요. 한국에서 온 배선우라고 합니다. 저는 인터뷰 작가이자 매거진 에디터로 일하고 있습니다. 단행본 출판 편집, 마을 아카이브 구축, 로컬 소식지 제작 등 ‘기록’과 관련된 다양한 기획을 병행해 왔습니다. 그중에서도 매주 새로운 사람을 만나 그들의 삶을 인터뷰하고 글로 담아내는 일을 가장 사랑합니다.
What attracted you to enroll in the English program at VGC?
Since my profession revolves around words, my daily routine back home involved creating headlines, copywriting, drafting manuscripts, and leaving the office at dawn. I constantly and intensely wrestled with questions like, “How can I craft a more beautiful sentence?” or “What adjective would best highlight my interviewee’s unique charm?”
Then, one day, a sudden curiosity sparked within me to step outside my familiar mother tongue and look at the world through a brand-new language. When my agency recommended several language schools, VGC immediately stood out. I chose VGC because I felt confident it was the perfect fit for my new challenge—it was well-known for its thorough student management and academic atmosphere, while still maintaining highly engaging activities.
늘 글을 다루는 직업이다 보니, 직장에서는 매일 제목을 짓고 카피를 쓰고 원고를 작성하며 새벽에 퇴근하는 게 일상이었습니다. ‘어떻게 하면 더 아름다운 문장을 만들 수 있을까’, ‘인터뷰이의 매력을 극대화할 형용사는 무엇일까’ 치열하게 고민했죠. 그러다 문득 매일 쓰는 익숙한 모국어를 벗어나, 새로운 언어로 세상을 바라보고 싶다는 호기심이 생겼습니다. 유학원에서 여러 어학원을 추천받았는데, 그중에서도 학생 관리가 철저하고 학구적인 수업 분위기를 갖추었으면서도, 액티비티 만족도가 높은 VGC가 제 새로운 도전에 가장 알맞은 곳이라는 확신이 들어 선택하게 되었습니다.
In what ways has the course improved your English skills?
English education in Korea typically follows a rigid, grammar-heavy curriculum, which often makes learning feel like a burden rather than something enjoyable. In fact, that is exactly why I distanced myself from English from a young age. In contrast, even though the entire curriculum at VGC is conducted in English, the program replaced that old dread with a sense of pleasant excitement and the true joy of learning.
Of course, it wasn’t easy from the start. Encountering basic grammatical concepts like verbs, adjectives, and objects entirely in English meant I had to relearn vocabulary from scratch. Every single moment felt like a massive question mark. However, that learning process actually became a great source of motivation for me. The classes—which focus on communication, collaboration, and practical application rather than rote memorization—deeply appealed to me as an editor. I can confidently guarantee that if anyone consistently follows the classes taught by the Core and Elective teachers at VGC, they will find their ears opening and their confidence to speak growing before they know it.
한국의 영어 교육은 대개 문법 위주의 엄격한 커리큘럼으로 진행되다 보니, 배우는 재미보다는 부담감이 앞서곤 했습니다. 제가 어릴 때 영어를 멀리하게 된 이유이기도 하죠. 반면 VGC의 프로그램은 모든 과정이 영어로 진행됨에도 불구하고, 부담감보다는 기분 좋은 긴장감과 배움의 즐거움을 알게 해주었습니다. 물론 처음부터 쉽지는 않았습니다. 동사, 형용사, 목적어 같은 문법 개념 자체를 영어로 다시 접하면서 단어부터 새로 외워야 했기에 매 순간이 물음표의 연속이었습니다. 하지만 오히려 그 배움의 과정이 제게 좋은 자극이 되었습니다. 주입식 교육이 아닌 소통과 협업 그리고 실전 응용 중심의 수업은 에디터인 제게 큰 매력으로 다가왔습니다. VGC의 코어(Core) 클래스와 일렉티브(Elective) 클래스 선생님들의 수업을 차근차근 따라가다 보면, 어느새 귀가 트이고 말문이 열리는 경험을 누구나 하게 될 것이라 장담합니다.
How would you rate the support you got from your teachers and staff?
To be completely honest, it had been nearly 16 years since I last touched English. Naturally, I had forgotten the words I memorized as a child, and I didn’t even know how to structure a basic sentence. My first week at VGC was a total mental breakdown. On my second day, I went to Laura, the Korean student supporter, and burst into tears. I told her, “I am struggling so much to understand the classes, and because I don’t get it, I feel like I’m being a burden to my classmates.”
Laura warmly embraced me and said, “You don’t need to stress so much about being perfect. For the first week or two, just let go of your expectations and enjoy yourself.” That piece of advice completely turned my school life around. Once I let go of my obsession with doing well, I truly began to enjoy the experience. At first, I simply used my intuition—laughing along when others laughed to get a feel for the atmosphere. Meanwhile, I meticulously jotted down unfamiliar words in my notebook and reviewed them every evening to reconstruct the lessons.
As time went on, my comprehension noticeably improved, and my weekly grades steadily rose. In particular, the well-balanced testing system—covering speaking, grammar, listening, and reading—kept me grounded and prevented my school life from becoming stagnant. More than anything, the positive attitude of the teachers and staff—who always listened closely to our hesitant words, made eye contact, and showed immense consideration—was a lesson in how I want to approach life moving forward. I would like to express my deepest respect and gratitude to all of them.
솔직히 고백하자면 영어를 놓은 지 거의 16년이 다 되었습니다. 어릴 때 외웠던 단어는 물론이고 기본적인 문장 구조를 만드는 법조차 잊어버린 상태였죠. 그래서 VGC에서의 첫 주 고비는 말 그대로 ‘멘붕’이었습니다. 등교 이틀째 되던 날에는 한국인 서포터인 로라(Laura)를 찾아가 눈물을 흘리기까지 했습니다. “수업을 알아듣기 너무 힘들고, 내가 이해를 못 하니 반 친구들에게 민폐를 끼치는 것 같다”고 털어놓았죠. 그때 로라는 제게 “잘하려고 너무 애쓸 필요 없다. 첫 1~2주는 마음을 내려놓고 그저 즐기라”며 따뜻하게 안아주었습니다. 그 위로 덕분에 제 학원 생활은 180도 달라졌습니다. 잘해야 한다는 강박을 버리고 상황 자체를 즐기기 시작했거든요. 처음에는 남들이 웃을 때 눈치껏 따라 웃으며 분위기를 익혔고, 모르는 단어는 노트에 꼼꼼히 메모해 두었다가 저녁에 복습하며 수업을 복기했습니다. 그렇게 시간이 흐르자 수업 이해도가 눈에 띄게 높아졌고 매주 성적도 향상되었습니다. 특히 스피킹, 문법, 리스닝, 리딩 등 균형 잡힌 테스트 시스템은 학원 생활이 느슨해지지 않도록 저를 단단히 잡아주었습니다. 무엇보다 늘 우리의 서툰 말에 귀 기울여주고, 눈을 맞추며 배려해 주는 선생님들과 스태프들의 긍정적인 태도는 제가 앞으로 살아가면서 배워야 할 ‘삶을 대하는 태도’ 그 자체였습니다. 이 자리를 빌려 그분들에게 깊은 존경과 감사를 전하고 싶습니다.
Do you think this course will help you in your future career?
Yes, absolutely. Learning a language means immersing yourself in that country’s culture and worldview. As a content creator, being able to communicate in English—the global language—is much more than just adding a line to my resume. It has become a crucial turning point that expands the stage of my career, allowing me to choose from and challenge myself with opportunities all around the world.

Are you happy with the classmates you have? Have you been able to create networks or connections through this program?
The precious connections I’ve made at VGC are invaluable assets that will make my life so much more colorful and beautiful in the future. Coming here brought a massive wave of energy into what had become a repetitive, monochrome daily routine back home. Day after day, I found myself inspired by the adventurous spirit of my classmates, who gathered here from all corners of the world, each with their own unique goals and stories. Ultimately, they helped me realize that there is no single “right answer” to life. I feel like I’ve gained crucial insights into the direction I want to steer my life next.

What made you want to study here in Vancouver? Is there a memorable moment or activity that you’d like to share?
I wanted to step away from the familiar environment, language, and lifestyle of Korea to bring a healthy change to my life. While exploring various global cities, I believed Vancouver would be the ultimate choice. Having experienced it firsthand, Vancouver is a city where you never have a dull moment, packed with breathtaking nature, a clean environment, and fascinating local culture.
I highly recommend VGC’s activity programs. If you join them with an open mind, it is the best opportunity to fully experience Vancouver’s great outdoors, culture, and diverse culinary scene, all while staying active and healthy.
